An island tour for those who want to experience the grassroots way of life still led by many of those native to the island. This tour is a visit to the home of an island family who practice the self-sufficient ways that were necessary not so long ago; then embark on a journey to experience the local wildlife including sloths and ,monkeys that will leave you with a grin from ear to ear!

Following an informative demonstration, you will be invited to prepare your own hand-formed tortilla and layer in one or more of the customary fillings and condiments. Whether you make your own, or leave it to the resident expert, you will have the opportunity to sample this humble but notable handheld part of Honduran heritage.
Their wood fired outdoor mud ovens are used every day to prepare food for their family. You will be shown how different local dishes are made, such as pastelitos, enchiladas, quesadillas and the famous baleadas, showing whats needed to make the tortilla through to the contents and the final cooking on the mud stove. Then it will be your turn to try your hand at using the same hand thrown technique to create your own. All this will take place under the family’s palm leaf palapa that serves as their outdoor kitchen.
The property has an extensive garden of local plants, bushes and trees native to the island that the family grows for their personal use. These supply the family with food, medicines and enjoyment. You will be free to wander the paths and learn about local plants – everything will be clearly labelled. And an expert in the use of the medicinal plants will be there to explain their uses and answer your questions.
The family also tends a number of animals on their homestead from chickens which supply them with eggs to peacocks and parrots kept for their amusement.
A visit to this rustic home will give you the best insight into the lives of many locals – past and present.
