Following an informative demonstration, you will be invited to prepare your own hand-formed tortilla and layer in one or more of the customary fillings and condiments. Whether you make your own, or leave it to the resident expert, you will have the opportunity to sample this humble but notable handheld part of Honduran heritage.
Their wood fired outdoor mud ovens are used every day to prepare food for their family. You will be shown how different local dishes are made, such as pastelitos, enchiladas, quesadillas and the famous baleadas, showing whats needed to make the tortilla through to the contents and the final cooking on the mud stove. Then it will be your turn to try your hand at using the same hand thrown technique to create your own. All this will take place under the family’s palm leaf palapa that serves as their outdoor kitchen.
A visit to this rustic home will give you the best insight into the lives of many locals – past and present.
You’ll see the island from Camp Bay beach in the east to West Bay beach at the western tip. You will realize firsthand how tourism has populated the western end while the east is where the locals still enjoy the uncrowded beaches, fish in the local style and cook the way their ancestors did before them.
And in between, as you make your way down the island you will experience hill top panoramic jungle and ocean views. You will see the villages and homes that locals have made for themselves; some very rural and self-sufficient while others are more crowded and communal.
