Tour Description

This is the most unique experience you can have while visiting Roatan. The Garifuna people have lived on Roatan since 1797. They are descendants of enslaved persons who intermarried with the carib Indians of Saint Vincent when their ship ran aground there. The two populations banded together to protect themselves against the British and held them off for decades before fleeing to Roatan with aid from the Spanish. Their history of strength and independence is represented through music and dance dating back to the origination of the community.

This tour takes you into a local Garifuna’s personal property where you will spend the day listening, learning and participating in the preparation of a true Machuca meal, Also, you will get a hands on experience in the preparation of the casabe bread, finally, your day would not be complete without learning about the many different types of roots that go into the preparation of the famous Guifiti drink. A local Garifuna dish along with a fresh natural fruit drink is included in this tour.

If you are looking for a tour that takes you back to the roots of the Garifuna people then this is as good as it gets. You will spend 4 hours immersed in their culture and leave with a true understanding of their history.
